America's first public arts conservatory, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts trains students at the high school, undergraduate and master’s levels for professional careers in the performing, visual and moving image arts. Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, the School of the Arts opened in Winston-Salem in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system when it was formed in 1972.
