Welcome to Winston-Salem

You look up, and you think, you didn’t know anyone could do that.

This is not a place you expected to see dance, at a contemporary art museum. Yet there they are, seven dancers, suspended with ropes and pulleys from various parts of the gallery, and you're certain that gravity is still in effect, but....

You begin to wonder, does the world know about this extraordinary dance company, alban elved, and is it true that they are based right here in Winston-Salem?

Dance in Winston-SalemSo, how do you like it? Ballet? Modern? Avant garde? Undefinable? When it comes to dance, Winston-Salem has it. Begin with any student dance production at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts or Wake Forest University, and prepare to be shocked – shocked! – (or maybe the better word is delighted) at the professional-caliber dance. Or, take in a performance by alban elved, the acclaimed modern dance company based right here.

Or, create a holiday tradition by attending "The Nutcracker" at the Stevens Center. Tchaikovsky's magical fairy-tale ballet is performed annually by the University of North Carolina School of the Artsstudents, with the original Russian choreography, glittering costumes and fabulous set designs.
