Welcome to Winston-Salem

Before Friday rush hour has finished rushing, the barricades go up, blocking off Fourth Street in downtown Winston-Salem.

Two hours later, at 6 p.m., the music starts. The crowd has already begun to gather, several hundred now, a thousand more on the way. Down in front of the stage, two people are already dancing, and more are sipping cold drinks, and getting ready to get up and dance.

Live music in Winston-SalemIt’s a common litany in any city smaller than, say, a half-million people: there’s nothing to do at night. We love it when people say that about Winston-Salem, because then we get to provide them with the list below. We try not to be smug about it. The truth is, if you can’t find anything to do here, you must have your eyes shut.

Would you like a few highlights? How about live music on the streets of downtown, three nights per week, every week, from May to Labor Day? How about a thriving independent music scene, with an eclectic array of performance spaces, including a rehabilitated garage and a reformed warehouse? How about a world-class symphony, and a stunning array of art school talent. OK, we’ll stop now and get on with the list.
