According to the state of North Carolina, the legacy of North Carolina's wine industry is rooted deep in the colonial heritage of Sir Walter Raleigh's Colony on Roanoke Island where the first scuppernong vine was cultivated. For more than a century, vineyards and wineries have perpetuated the agricultural tradition that is the heart of North Carolina.

North Carolina's rich farmland and mild climate contribute to the success and wide variety of grapes grown across the state, producing more than 500,000 gallons of wine annually. North Carolina has grown to be one of the twelve largest wine producers in the country. Winemakers use grape varieties, such as European-types, native muscadines, and other fruits, that are grown in North Carolina to create wine with a superior flavor.

The Yadkin Valley is fast becoming a center of North Carolina vinifera wine production. The microclimate found along the front range of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the Yadkin River flows, along with the high productivity of the soil both contribute to a grape ideally suited for vinifera wine. Come and experience the wineries of the Yadkin Valley - all within close proximity to Winston-Salem.

The 1.4 million-acre Yadkin Valley, just west of Winston-Salem, is home to exquisite vineyards and wineries and was approved as North Carolina's first American Viticultural Area (AVA). The Yadkin Valley designation appears on bottles when wine is made from 85 percent grapes grown in this region. The majority of wineries offer tours and tastings.
