Where is Winston-Salem located?
Winston-Salem is centrally located in North Carolina and is easily accessible via Interstates 77, 40, 85 and U.S. Highway 52. As such, we are a convenient drive for the majority of regional- and state-based meetings. Because of this, meetings held in Winston-Salem almost always have increased attendance.

Downtown Winston-Salem features many restaurants ranging from sandwich shops to fine dining, some of which feature entertainment and outdoor dining (seasonally) and more are being added every day.





What is your primary airport?
The Piedmont Triad International Airport is the primary airport for scheduled air transportation and operates under the three letter airport code, GSO. Smith Reynolds Airport (INT) located in Winston-Salem serves charter and general aviation.





How far is the airport from downtown Winston-Salem?
The Piedmont Triad International Airport is 20 miles from downtown Winston-Salem and is easily accessible off Interstate 40. Smith Reynolds is located 10 minutes north of downtown.





What type of ground transportation is available to and from the airport?
There are several options to choose from including taxi cab, PART (Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation), Central Piedmont Transportation, limousine service and rental cars, making it convenient to get to your destination in Winston-Salem.

Express shuttle service is operated by PART from the airport to each major city in the Piedmont Triad from Monday through Friday. Airport passengers boarding at the airport are taken to a nearby hub where they can transfer to their final destination. The Winston-Salem Express arrives and departs from the Transportation Center in downtown Winston-Salem, located directly behind the Twin City Quarter (on Fifth Street between Trade and Liberty Streets) and within one-half block of the M.C. Benton, Jr. Convention & Civic Center.

What interstates are accessible in Winston-Salem?
Winston-Salem is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 52 and Interstate 40 (I-40). Business Interstate 40 runs parallel to I-40 through downtown. Interstate 85 is located just south of Winston-Salem and connects to the city via U.S. Highway 52. Interstate 77 is located one hour west of Winston-Salem, and Interstate 95 is two hours east of Winston-Salem, both are accessed via I-40.





Why would a convention group, requiring air transportation, benefit from holding an event in Winston-Salem?
The airport layout allows individuals, as well as groups, easy movement from airplane to baggage to ground transportation. Additionally, as a second-tier convention city serviced by multiple airlines, users typically find flight pricing more competitive than a single-hub dominated city.

Winston-Salem is the home of Smith Reynolds Airport. Located just north of downtown, it serves charter and general aviation.





Are citywide events feasible?
Yes. Winston-Salem's infrastructure including major highways and interstates allow meeting participants the ability to travel across the city within 15 minutes.





How many hotels are located in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County?
There are 47 hotels with nearly 5,000 rooms in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County ranging in size from a four-room bed and breakfast to a 460-plus room hotel. Accommodations are located near the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (LJVM) Complex and Wake Forest University; in Clemmons near Tanglewood Park; in Kernersville, around Hanes Mall; within close proximity to business centers; adjacent to both regional medical centers; near Winston-Salem State University; as well as in the downtown and Old Salem areas.





What is the capacity of the coliseum?
The maximum coliseum floor space is 25,740 square feet. It can seat 14,665 for an athletic event and 15,272 for concerts. The coliseum has the ability to add partitions within its facility to allow for smaller events. As a result, Joel Theater allows for an intimate setting with seating for 5,600.

Also within the coliseum are the new 3,290 square foot assembly rooms. One of these three adjoining rooms is 1,650 square feet and features a built in bar. Theater-style seating in the rooms is as follows: Winston Room - 287, Salem Room - 110, and Piedmont Room - 126. They are accessible via separate entryways or through the coliseum.





How many hotels (rooms) are within a 10 minute drive of the coliseum complex?
There are approximately 2,500 rooms in 23 accommodations, ranging from bed and breakfasts to full service hotels, within a 10 minute drive of the coliseum.

What type of nightlife does Winston-Salem offer?
Winston-Salem offers diverse entertainment options. In downtown, near the convention center, you can find hotels with lounges/bars and, even some with live entertainment. The Speakeasy Jazz is located on Fourth and Cherry Streets and also features live entertainment. Just north of the convention center is the Downtown Arts District, as well as The Garage which features a variety of local and regional artists. The First Friday Gallery Hop is held every month in the evening in the Downtown Arts District.

A major anchor on Fourth Street is the North Carolina School of the Arts' Stevens Center. Performances at this venue showcase future stars in opera, orchestral and chamber music, jazz, ballet and contemporary dance and theater. Plus, for the first time in many years, projection equipment is back in this restored 1929 movie palace. The School of the Arts School of Filmmaking and the Winston-Salem Cinema Society reintroduced movies downtown to sold out crowds. These include first run independent and foreign-language films. The center seats approximately 1,300 people.

If you're in and around the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, you'll find an ample supply of sports bars. Burke Street in Historic West End features pubs and bars with live music. Some are geared more toward college students and the younger crowd.

With our strong arts community, it's not unusual to find an evening gallery opening at the Sawtooth School , home of the RJR Gallery, the Associated Artists Gallery, and the Milton Rhodes Gallery. In the Reynolda Historic District, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art is open select evenings and during exhibit openings.

Other performing arts venues showcase the Winston-Salem Symphony, Piedmont Opera Theater and Salem College and Wake Forest University students, among others.
