Best Fried Chicken Finds in Winston-Salem

Every day in the South is Fried Chicken Day but in honor of #NationalFriedChickenDay, here’s a quick rundown of where we like to go around town for a bite of the bird. List is in alpha order, but if we missed your favorite spot – head to our Facebook or Twitter page and let us know!

Milner’s American Southern
630 S Stratford Road Winston-Salem, NC 27103
(336) 768-2221
Locals must really love this place because for 11 year’s it’s been voted “best fried chicken in Winston-Salem” and recently earned a nod in Southern Living Magazine. Pretty easy to see (taste) why! Milner’s serves their buttermilk and Texas Pete marinated,10 oz. boneless breast, fried crispy alongside Carolina Gold rice, collard greens, and tomato gravy. Yeah, you read that right, that’s tomato gravy y’all!

Mozelle’s Fresh Southern Bistro
878 W 4th St Winston-Salem, NC 27101
(336) 703-5400
For a sweet and savory twist to your fried bird, head over to Mozelle’s. Named after the owner’s grandmother, Mozelle’s is a staple for fine Southern cuisine with signature menu items including savory tomato pie and signature pull pork spring rolls. But the real showstopper is the fried chicken, topped with warm peach chutney and sides of your haricot verts and creamy macaroni and cheese. Really want to up the ante? Swap out the haricot verts for the spicy collards w/ bacon. You can thank us later.

Simply Soul Restaurant
4339 S Main St Winston-Salem, NC 27127
(336) 788-0400
Family owned and operated, this soul food restaurant is nestled on the southernmost side of Winston-Salem where food is certainly worth the drive. Tender, moist fried chicken wings, breasts, and all those things! The husband-and-wife duo catered for 13 years prior to opening the restaurant in 2012, so believe us when we say that their recipe is one that stands the test of time. Psst…here’s a little secret: some of the best peach cobbler in town, but you didn’t hear it from us!

Slappy’s Chicken
200 W Acadia Ave Winston-Salem, North Carolina, NC 27127
(336) 761-0268
As far as we know, Slappy’s is the only establishment in Winston-Salem serving up hot chicken. With the choice of white or dark meat, the juicy bone-in fried chicken is dipped in their secret sauce that is spiced to perfection. Sure, you could order it dry but where’s the thrill in that? Crazy side items include Cheez-it Mac n Cheese and homemade potato salad.

Spring House Restaurant, Kitchen & Bar
450 N Spring St Winston-Salem, NC 27101
(336) 293-4797
The Colonel is what they call it. And we “luv” it! Housed in the last remaining mansion on what was once referred to as “Millionaire’s Row,” Spring House executive chef, Timothy Grandinetti rotates the menu items on a seasonal basis but one signature dish that simply cannot go away is The Colonel fried chicken entree. The crispy buttermilk fried chicken is served with sawmill gravy and smoked tomato and pimento cheese grits. It’s a progressive spin on a soulful, Southern favorite.

Sweet Potatoes (well shut my mouth!!) a Restaurant
607 North Trade Street Winston-Salem, NC 27101
(336) 727-4844
Alas! Last on the list but first in the hearts of many Winston-Salem locals, Sweet Potatoes recently opened their new location only a couple blocks from the original in the Downtown Arts District. Owners Vivian Joiner and Chef Stephanie Tyson have filled the bellies of tourists and residents alike for more than 10 years showcasing a menu of Southern foundation and creole inspiration. Dinner is served with two options: “Smothered Yard Bird,” a pan-fried chicken breast with country ham, spicy greens, and melted Brie smothered in chicken gravy and served over rice. Or, go the more traditional route with the “Southernly Fried Chicken,” which comes with two boneless fried chicken breasts served with sweet and horseradish mashed potatoes and peach onion marmalade. As if that weren’t enough, Sunday brunch here is the only chance to order their famous chicken tenders n sweet potato pancakes, or “It’s a Sunday Thing!” with spicy greens, sweet potato biscuit, and gravy.

So there you have it. Let us know if we missed one of your favorite spots to find fried chicken and we’ll be sure to add it to the list! Happy crunching everyone!
