Discover Winston-Salem’s Crafts and Drafts Scene

Winston-Salem knows beer. You could even say it’s part of our historic DNA.  After all we are the historic birthplace of North Carolina’s first microbrewery (Single Brother’s House in Old Salem), the state’s first pour-your-own craft beer wall, home to Foothills Brewing’s wildly popular Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout and host city to a monthly Beer School that’s sure to transform any barley brewing novice to a proud beer connoisseur.

Below check out a listing of breweries and beer shops, as well as scheduled beer dinners, "hop off the press" brew releases and other beer-related events. For all Winston-Salem wine, brew and dining options request a copy of our Wine & Dine Guide here.

The Breweries

Fiddlin' Fish Brewing Company
772 Trade Street NW
Winston-Salem, NC

Centrally located in downtown Winston-Salem, Fiddlin' Fish Brewery is right in the heard of the Downtown Arts District neighboring Broad Branch Distillery and Black Mountain Chocolate. And, it's an easy block away from Wise Man Brewing making it a perfect stop on your very own Craft Draft Crawl around Winston-Salem. The brainchild of two cousins, owners Stuart Barnhart and David Ashe share the same passions -- cold beer and a love of the outdoors. The name Fiddlin’ Fish comes from the cousins’ childhood summers in the Blue Ridge Mountains, hiking, fishing and listening to great music. The brewery, on Trade Street, has a 15-barrel brewhouse producing traditional styles as well as an ever-changing cast of seasonals and one-offs. Patrons of "the Fish" especially enjoy local artwork covering the exposed brick walls and six 60” TVs showing favorite sports and regular live music, games, and events. Hungry? The brewery hosts daily rotating food trucks for all your cravings.

Check out honorary hometown brews including Black Mountain Chocolate stout, Ardmore Amber Ale, and Camel City Session IPA.

Foothills Brewing
638 West Fourth Street
Winston-Salem, NC 27101

Opened in 2005, Foothills certainly spearheaded the modern-day craft beer movement in Winston-Salem and continues to lead the way as the beer scene here continues to expand. If the name Foothills rings a bell, it may be because of their wildly popular Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout, released just once a year in winter, that sells out within days. Arguably one of the most highly-anticipated craft beer releases in the country, release day draws overnight lines outside the building and a "front of the line" entry ticket that has sold for more than $500!
Check the Foothills Brewing website for a calendar of weekly trivia and live music.

Beer isn't the only thing brewing up here, Foothills Brewing is also a full-service restaurant and pub headed by culinary genius Chef Shane Moore. Chef Shane is the master when it comes to creating flavorful dishes that pair perfectly with Foothills' beers.Cut the calorie counting and give the fried pickle chips a whirl. The tangy, crunchy appetizer is one of their most popular starters and a great way to set your palate for an amazing meal to come. Diners can't go wrong with the Brewhouse Pork Ribs, slow roasted in their Carolina Blonde Cream Ale or the chef favorite, bacon-wrapped trout.

Foothills Brewing has also invites you to their Tasting Room for another cool, fun atmosphere to enjoy 28 tap lines of Foothills craft beer. The tasting room offers tours of its production facility and hosts special events. Tours are offered on weekends only. Saturdays at 1, 2 and 3 p.m., and Sundays at 1 and 2 p.m.
