There are multiple talented arts groups around the city putting on fantastic shows for you to enjoy throughout the holiday season. You’ll find traditional performances like “A Christmas Carol,” as well as newer options that may turn into fun family traditions. The hard part will be choosing which ones to see!

A Carolina Christmas by the Winston-Salem Symphony

Date: Dec. 1 at 3 p.m.
Location: Reynolds Auditorium

The Winston-Salem Symphony is ringing in the holidays by performing your favorite Christmas carols and tunes on December 1. Those who attend will be in for a treat as guest soprano Dee Donasco will be part of the performance. Whether you are a classical music aficionado or just love live music, this will be an impressive show to attend.


 

Miracle on 34th Street by Kernersville Little Theatre

Date: Dec. 6-7, 13-15 (various times)

Another traditional favorite, this story follows Kris Kringle through a competency trial after he upends a Macy’s Department Store in New York City by sending customers elsewhere for their Christmas shopping. This funny, family-friendly show highlights the true meaning of Christmas and is perfect for anyone looking for a little holiday magic.

 


The Winston Salem Symphony performs Handel's Messiah

“Handel’s Messiah” is one of the most famous oratorios of all time composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741 and first performed in 1742. The work includes the popular chorus “Hallelujah,” as well as other beautiful pieces that will pull on your heartstrings.

 


 

4 Calling Birds Winter Tour

Date: Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
Location: Hanesbrands Theatre

If you’re known for singing the songs of December all year long, then come sing along with internationally acclaimed performers Ian and Eva Benjamin and local favorites Erinn Dearth and Dan Beckmann. This uplifting performance will include many tracks of the holiday season for you to enjoy.


 

White Christmas by Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance

Date: Dec. 12-15, 19-22 (various times)
Location: Theatre Alliance

This wholesome musical is the story of two World War II veterans who follow a singing sister duo to their Christmas show at a lodge in Vermont. The lodge just happens to be owned by their former Army commander. It features 17 Irving Berlin songs, including the beloved title song, “White Christmas.”


 

A Christmas Carol by Little Theatre of Winston-Salem

A true Christmas classic, “A Christmas Carol” shouldn’t be missed this holiday season! The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem brings to life the story of Ebenezer Scrooge as he’s visited by ghosts on Christmas Eve and experiences a big change in his stony heart. There are multiple showings during two long weekends in mid-December at Reynolds Place Theatre inside the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.


The Piedmont Wind Symphony performs their holiday concert in Winston-Salem

Boogie Winter Wonderland by Piedmont Wind Symphony

For a concert that is festive and fun, you don’t want to miss Boogie Winter Wonderland performed by the Piedmont Wind Symphony. They’ll play your favorite holiday tunes, but with a funky twist. Come out to hear a wide variety from James Brown and Chaka Khan to Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

 


 

Candlelight a Holiday Special by UNCSA

A new offering this holiday season, this is a live, multi-sensory musical experience performed by the Listeso String Quartet. Lit by the glow of candlelight, they will perform many holiday favorites, including pieces from “The Nutcracker.” In addition to classical pieces, they’ll perform traditional Christmas carols and songs of Hanukkah.
